On Wednesday morning four excited pupils, John Robson, Daniel McGarrity, Stevie Kyriakidis and Rebecca Trafford set off for Aston University with Mrs Waldock and Mrs Dunion to compete in the Salter’s and Royal Society of Chemistry Festival of Chemistry. The team is selected from the regular attendees of the Chemistry Club that meets every Thursday and is open to Years 7 and 8. On arrival they were greeted by Doctor Gareth Griffiths who showed them the laboratory where they would be working. After a brief introduction they started the first challenge which was a murder mystery. They had to solve a crime using chromatography and salt analysis techniques. They could not ask for help from Mrs Waldock or Mrs Dunion. They seemed very calm and organised and their chromatograms appeared to be going well. They finished the task with time to spare and were able to write up the forensic report. They were being watched closely by the judges, who were looking for safe practice and team work.

After lunch they were back in the Chemistry Laboratory for the University Challenge to solve another problem, this time it involved dyes. Once again they could not ask for help. Finally after an interesting lecture which included liquid nitrogen, dry ice and ether, they waited to hear who had won the Salter’s and University challenges. They were thrilled when they realised that Foremarke Hall had won the Salter’s challenge!

Very well done John, Rebecca, Stevie and Daniel, it was a pleasure to accompany you to Aston University. Mrs Waldock and Mrs Dunion would like to praise the children for their proficient and organised approach to the Challenges.

Busy weekend, despite the rain!

Foremarke is recouperating after another busy weekend of activities!

On Friday evening at Repton's 400 Hall, the "Kids for Kids" charity concert was held with Foremarke pupils performing music from the Higgledy Piggledy Jazz music books. Cup cakes and a visit from "Super Duck" all contributed to a fabulous evening enjoyed by all, raising funds for the Theo Trust charity.

After school on Saturday and a very busy Open Morning, the boarders ventured out to the Peak District to enjoy a lovely break in the weather! Alas, the respite was short-lived.

Fresh from success in their Grade 5 examinations – both having been awarded distinction – these two talented young players entertained a large and attentive audience with works by J. S. Bach, Reubke, C. S. Lang and others.

The performances were extremely accomplished, particularly in light of the fact the students had only a short amount of time before the concert to practise and get used to the organ at St. Peter’s; an instrument rather different to the one they are used to in Chapel. The organ, installed in 2010, is unique in the UK: it is the first organ to seamlessly combine pipe and digital technology alongside one another in an instrument of this size. It has a magnificent array of tone colour and has attracted notable recitalists such as Paul Hale and David Briggs.

Both Kyoko and Joseph are becoming seasoned public performers on the instrument; in addition to this recital in Nottingham, they have played in two Organ Half Hours in Chapel and Lichfield and Gloucester Cathedrals in the past year. We are very grateful to Dr. Siepmann and all at St. Peter’s for making us feel so welcome and for their favourable comments, and we hope to make this recital an annual event!

New Music School now open - TOURS THIS WEEK!

The doors were opened on the first day of the new term to our brand new Music School, Language Lab and classrooms.

During Michaelmas half term Alistair attended the East Midlands audition for the National Children’s Orchestra. Alistair performed two pieces to a panel of two, the lady being Mrs Vivienne Price who founded the orchestra. Alistair was accompanied on the piano by Mrs Bloor, our Director of Music, who reported on how superbly well he played. Alistair then had to undergo two sight reading tests. Alistair came out beaming and irrespective of what the result might be, he felt he had played well and was happy with the effort he had made to prepare for this. It was then a case of waiting … and then on Thursday, 1st December the good news came that he had been accepted into the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain! Alistair told Mrs Bloor the news just before the start of our concert at St Wystan’s Church and what a fabulous start to the evening it was!!
